Standards relevant to global digital management of rights

Music Industry Integrated Identifiers Project (MI3P):
MI3P was initiated to support the management of online music e-commerce and started in September 2000. Its objective is to build an infrastructure that record companies, music right societies, music service providers and other to communicate and exachange business information across network using unique identification systems and standarized protocols. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the International Federation of the Phonographic Indstry (IFPI), the Confédération Internationale es Sociétés d'Auteurs et Compositeurs (CISAC) and the Bureau international des Sociétés Gérant les Droits d'Enregistrement et de Reproduction Mécanique (BIEM) are participating in this project.

The primary MI3P standards include the Global Release Identifier Standard (GRid) and the Musical Work License Identifier Standard (MWLI). A data dictionary has been developed to provide a common vocabulary for all MI3P standards.

International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC):
ISWC AKA ISO 150707 published its first edition on November 15, 2001. The standard defines the format, administration and rules for allocating ISWC to musical works. Its purpose is to improve efficiency in the administration of rights to musical works and reduce the possibility of errors when information about musical works is exchanged among different parties on an international level. Within the ISWC system, every musical work can be assigned its own ISO standard unique identification number, in the same way that ISBN is the unique identifier for books or ISSN for magazines.

The International Standard Recording Code (ISRC):
ISRC is the international identification system for sound recordings and music video recordings. Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording. The identification code can be permanently encoded into a product as its digital fingerprint, which provides the means to automatically identify recordings for royalty payments.

CISAC's Common Information System (CIS):
The aim of the CIS is to create a world-wide digital rights management system. The CIS consists of two series of tools that provide the building blocks to global digital copyright administration.

The first component features the integration of unique, ISO-certified, standardized international identifiers of works and parties relevant to the protection of intellectual rights. The second component pertains to a network of global databases as a central repository of authorative information on the creative process for all participating CISAC societies.

Meeting Notes

Jazz 78 RPM digitization updates:
1. Have finished scanning 46 78rpm discs and should be able to finish the rest by the end of the week.
2. Have started digitizing audio and have finished 15.
3. Have started a bibliography list and is included in the bibliography section on the MAPP website. More will be added to the list.

Pending work:
1. Need to post information about the ITST project on MAPP.
2. Continue to work on the bibliography list and links for 78 rpm records.
3. Start enter metadata not included in MARC.
4. Start an initial sketch of the web site for the digital archive of 78 rpm records.
5. Start writing the Archiving paper.
